AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE
TECHNOLOGY

Automotive Service Technology is a two-year program that is nationally recognized as industry certified through NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation, Inc.). NATEF is under the supervision of ASE (National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence).

This program teaches the four areas of certification. These four areas are electrical, brakes, engine performance, and steering, suspension, and alignment. Students start with electrical systems and learn how to trace the flow of current using different electronic test equipment. Braking systems are covered the second semester where students learn to machine rotors and drums, replace pads, shoes, and master cylinders, and trouble shoot antilock braking systems.

The second year students learn the basic principles of engine operation and cover engine rebuilding. Students review electrical systems and the onboard diagnostics of different autos. The final semester covers suspension systems which includes struts, springs, rear axles, and four-wheel alignment.

The program is open to both males and females and the job outlook is great since Alabama is now in the automobile manufacturing business. In fact, there is a shortage of a skilled workpool necessary to supply Nissan, Mercedes, and Honda the employees they need. Technicians are in demand by dealerships for their service departments. More specific information can be supplied on request.
